Indonesia is experiencing a very difficult situation in regards to the degradation of environment ,e.g., forest degradation, pollution, and loss of biodiversity. A systematic and coordinated effort is required to improve the environmental quality, but at the same time to provide an appropriate basic need of the people and improve standard of living. The objectives will require more young scientists and environmental managers.
For this purpose, MAB Certificate Award was again issued in 2003 for the third time. MAB Certificate Award was conducted through a joint activity between Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and UNESCO Jakarta Office since 1999. This award presented to the young scientists and environmental managers in recognition for their work, demonstrating their high-level of environment-awareness. MAB Certificate is made as one of the supporting mechanisms for the young Indonesian people working on these challenging issues.
It is hoped that the MAB Certificate would convey a message to the young people about their duties and responsibilities to contribute, through professional work, to solving these challenging problems encountered in the country.
It is also aimed to encourage young researchers and environmental managers to participate in UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme in Indonesia, and to improve relationships between people and their environment. The MAB approach reconciles conservation with sustainable use of natural resources and the maintenance of cultural values, through research and training.
